Okay, so I don’t live off the grid anymore and I sold my house. Here I am in an upstairs three bedroom, two bath apartment in a state that is better known for its casino’s, brothels and dirt than its green living. Granted, there are some going green limitations for my immediate situation but my goal is to get as green as possible.

Five ways to start going green while living in an apartment:

1. Replace all light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs. This is something that we have done. Yes, they are more expensive from the start but in getting a light bulb that will last for several years, in the end you will save more money and conserve more energy than use a regular light bulb.

I grew up with a reverence for nature. I was taught how human beings have the ability to live within the means of the planet instead of living to dominate the planet. As a child moving into adolescence I retained those values and traits so much so, that when I moved in with my father he deemed me a “Goddamn, tree hugging liberal.” Moving on into young adulthood I held on to being a tree hugger and was proud to be so as it was a large part of my identity. Whenever someone would call me a hippie tree hugger, my only response was to thank them.
